Description
Red spider zinnia (Zinnia tenuifolia ‘Red Spider’) is much daintier than its big, frilly-flowered relatives (Z. elegans). It reaches about 2 feet tall on its own (somewhat taller if it has companions to lean on), with small, single, red-orange to scarlet flowers through the summer, and even into fall with deadheading. It makes a cheerful addition to an annual flower bed, or a great filler in a mixed border while you’re waiting for more permanent plantings to settle in. It’s also charming in a cottage garden, in a large container, or as a cut flower in a tiny arrangement. Full sun. Annual.
By the way, red spider zinnia is most often listed as Zinnia tenuifolia, but you may also see its botanical name as Z. tenuiflora or Z. peruviana. Though the names are a bit mixed up, the flowers are definitely distinctive.
Harvested in August and September 2022. At least 20 seeds.
