Zea mays ‘Glass Gem’ (Flint Corn) [20 Seeds]

Germination Information: You could, if you wish, start the seeds 1/2″ deep indoors in pots in early to mid-spring (figure three seeds in each 3- to 4-inch pot), then transplant the seedlings (still in their trios) after all danger of frost has passed. After a week or two, you could clip out the extras in each trio to leave just one. That approach is a good one if you need to control the specific placement of the plants in your garden. Otherwise, it’s much easier to sow the seeds outdoors in late spring.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Though ‘Glass Gem’ is technically a type of popcorn, you probably won’t be growing it just to eat it—you’ll want to admire its exquisitely beautiful kernels. The plants themselves look like any other corn plant, topping out at around 5 to 6 feet. The thrill comes in fall when you peel back the dry husks to reveal the colorful ears. Each one is different! At its best, ‘Glass Gem’ produces translucent kernels in a wide range of colors, and those are the ears you tend to see in photographs. Be aware that not all of the ears will look like that—some will have matte kernels—but all are lovely for fall decorating indoors or out. (And yes, you could try to popping some of the kernels too!) Full sun. Annual.

Harvested in October 2021. At least 20 seeds.

Cannot ship to NV or WA.
