Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that benefit from or require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to sow the seeds about 1/8″ deep in a pot in fall to early winter, setting it outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after January, give the pot a chilling period of a month or two.

It is also possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) if you start them in very warm, moist, bright conditions, without a chilling period. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 4 to 6 weeks or so, then try the artificial chilling period before moving them back to warmth and light.

Description

Long appreciated for its herbal uses, chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is pretty enough to be worth growing just for its ornamental features. In mild areas (roughly south of Zone 7), it can grow as a large shrub or small tree, reaching 10 to 15 feet tall. In Zones 5 to 7, it’s usually more of a medium-sized shrub. Winter cold can kill the stem tips partway or even all the way to the ground, but that’s okay because the plant blooms on new growth, generally reaching 4 to 6 feet by bloom time in mid- to late summer (continuing into early fall). Showy sprays of small, light purple-blue to medium purple flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies. The palmately compound leaves are delightfully aromatic too. Full sun. Zones 5 to 10. Chaste tree may self-sow and is considered invasive in some areas, so you may want to do some further research before adding this shrub to your garden in mild climates.
