Viola odorata (Sweet Violet) [15 Seeds]

$4.50

Germination Information: The best way to get these started seems to be sowing in late summer or fall, about 1/8 inch deep, and leaving them outdoors for the winter, with germination likely in spring. If you sow in spring or summer, they might sprout the first year or wait until the second year.

Description

Sweet violet (Viola odorata) is a delight in mid- to late spring, with its sweetly scented flowers over rich green leaves. I collected these seeds from ‘Konigin Charlotte’ (‘Queen Charlotte’), which has purple flowers, and I think it’s most likely that the seedlings will have purple flowers too. The plants typically reach 6 to 8 inches tall and can spread somewhat by runners as well as self-sowing. Partial shade is generally ideal, but I have mine in full shade (on the north side of a shed) and they seem very happy there. I’ve seen varying reports about the hardiness, from Zones 4 to 8 to Zones 6 to 8.

2023-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in early June 2024. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
