Germination Information: For a plant that can self-sow so abundantly, getting the seeds started at first can take some patience. They apparently need dark conditions, so cover them lightly. Sow them in a pot or nursery bed anytime and set them outdoors; they will germinate when the conditions are right. Be aware that it may take a few weeks to several months for the first sign of sprouting (possibly not until the following spring), and not all of the seeds will germinate at the same time. They can be an exercise in patience, but they will eventually repay your efforts.

Description

If you appreciate tiny treasures as much as big, bold blooms, this little gem is worth a try. European field pansy (Viola arvensis) produces fingernail-sized flowers with pale yellow petals and a deeper yellow center brushed with a few purple whiskers. Usually reaching 6 to 10 inches tall, it’s a little charmer along a path or the front of a border. Here in southeastern PA, it flowers in spring and fizzles out when summer heat arrives; in cooler climates, it can flower into or even through the summer. Full sun to light shade. Annual. Self-sows freely once you get it established and can be considered weedy in some areas.

Collected in late May 2022. At least 20 seeds.

Smooth purple coneflower (Echinacea laevigata) is considered to be a federally endangered species. Several years ago, I received a gift of seeds from a mystery donor and have been enjoying it in my garden ever since. The plant-to-plant variation is really interesting—different color intensity and petal widths, for example—but all show the typical drooping petals and smooth leaves and stems. It has been flowering for a good 3 weeks already, while E. purpurea is just starting to flower. Easy from winter-sown seed. I’ve had it germinate in warm conditions too, without any chilling, but at a lower germination percentage. Lovely as a single plant in the garden and gorgeous in groups! Large-flowered collomia (Collomia grandiflora): perfectly peachy, with blue pollen as a perfect finishing touch. Another annual native to California that adapts easily to life elsewhere, including here in PA: Farnsworth’s jewel flower (Streptanthus farnsworthianus). The small flowers are cute by themselves, but against those purple bracts—just wow. Calico monkeyflower (Diplacus pictus): a California native that has been perfectly happy here in Pennsylvania.
