Veronicastrum virginicum ex ‘Erica’ (Culver’s Root) [25 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because they are extremely tiny and need careful handling, and because they benefit from or require a chilling period.

The easiest approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in a pot in fall through early winter, setting them outdoors so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing method can work well.)

If you sow after January, give the pot an artificial chilling period of 2 to 3 months.

It is possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) if you start them in moist, bright conditions, ideally around 55°F to 60°F. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within a month or so, then try the artificial chilling period.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum) typically grows 5 to 7 feet tall, with slender, spiky clusters of white flowers in mid- or late summer, followed by long-lasting seedheads. ‘Erica’ is a selection of this US native. It is primarily known for its densely branched, pale pink blooms, held atop stems usually 4 to 5 feet tall, but my favorite feature is its deep reddish purple spring growth. It’s very difficult to find this cultivar for sale, though. I collected seeds from my ‘Erica’ and offer them for those of you who are interested in seeing what they produce. There is no guarantee that these seeds will produce seedlings with pink flowers and/or purple spring foliage—variation is likely—but so far, the seedlings I have grown out do have those traits, as shown in the photos here. Still, these seedlings will not be ‘Erica’, but “seedlings from ‘Erica”” or “‘Erica’ seedlings.” Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.

Collected in mid October 2023. At least 25 seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
