Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for seeds that benefit from or require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to surface-sow them in a pot in fall to early winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after December, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months.

It is possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal rate) if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 2 weeks or so, then try the artificial chilling period.

Description

One look at either the common or botanical name of this plant tells you pretty much everything you need to know: giant ironweed (Vernonia gigantea, formerly V. altissima) is an exceptionally tall ironweed species, easily reaching 8 feet tall by the end of summer. Like other ironweeds, it’s a butterfly magnet, with showy clusters of vibrant purple flowers in late summer. Giant ironweed is a marvelous companion for other tall late-season perennials, such as Joe-Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) and perennial sunflowers (Helianthus), and warm-season ornamental grasses, such as Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans). US native. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.
