Description
Most mulleins fall into the white-to-yellow color range, so purple mullein (Verbascum phoeniceum ‘Violetta’) is special and distinctive for that alone. It is also much smaller than many other mulleins, reaching just 2 to 3 feet in bloom, so its fits easily in small beds or near the front of a border. It flowers in late spring to early or midsummer, with airy spikes of rich violet-purple flowers over low, evergreen rosettes. It looks fabulous with chartreuse-y companions, like euphorbias (one of my favorite companions for it is Euphorbia palustris ‘Zauberflote’), and with low to medium-sized grasses, such as Mexican feather grass (Nassella tenuissima) and tufted hair grass (Deschampsia cespitosa). Let the seeds form so the plants can self-sow or cut off the bloom stem at the base to possibly get more flowers in summer. Full sun is best, but the plants can take light shade too. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.
2021-collected seed sold out. I hope to collect again in July 2022. At least 20 seeds.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
