Description

Dark mullein (Verbascum nigrum) produces broad rosettes of green leaves and upright stems that are lined with yellow flowers along the upper half through much of the summer. Height in bloom is 3 to 4 feet. Dark mullein looks terrific in groups of three or more, but even one plant can make a lovely vertical accent in a small bed or border. Consider planting some near a path so you can observe the intense bee activity, particularly in the morning hours. One other tip: If you cut off the first stalk(s) as soon as the last flowers finish, the plants may send up new stalks for a round of fall bloom! Full sun is best; average, well-drained soil. Some sources list this species as a biennial, but I have had the same patch for years now, and its self-sown seedlings have also survived for several seasons in my Pennsylvania garden, so I consider it a perennial. Reportedly hardy in Zones 3 to 9.

Collected in August and September 2023. At least 30 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
