Triodia flava (Purpletop Tridens) [40 Seeds]

(1 customer review)

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because germination may be slow and irregular.

One option is sowing in fall or winter and leaving the pot outdoors; then the seeds can sprout when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing approach can work well for these seeds.) Or, you could try starting in warm, bright conditions; if no seedlings appear in 4 to 6 weeks, then give the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month.

Either way, I’d suggest surface-sowing (gently press the seeds into the surface of the growing medium). Sow them all in one pot and transplant them (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 10 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Purpletop tridens (Triodia flava, formerly Tridens flavus), also known as greasegrass or tall redtop, is a clump-forming, warm-season grass with airy, reddish brown to deep purple panicles atop 4- to 6-foot-tall stems in mid- to late summer, and yellow fall color. It is an interesting addition to meadows, prairie-style plantings, and naturalistic gardens. (I’m not sure I’d advise it for a typical garden border because of its tendency to self-sow.) Purpletop tridens is a larval host for some butterfly species, including common wood nymph and several kinds of skippers. US native (seed collected from my meadow in Bucks County, PA). Full sun. Perennial; Zones 5 to 9.

Collected in early October 2023. At least 40 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
