Thalictrum rochebrunianum (Giant Meadow Rue) [15 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these only for gardeners who have experience with challenging perennial seeds. I find it easiest to sow them (barely covered with growing medium) in October through January and set the pot outdoors, so they can germinate when conditions are right in spring. (Seeds I sowed on January 14 using the winter-sowing method began germinating on March 25.) I have also read that they can be sown indoors in cool or warm conditions, but germination may be slow and erratic, and the seeds may end up needing an artificial chilling period (in a refrigerator) of 4 to 8 weeks if there is no apparent sprouting after a few weeks. I must admit that I have not had luck with indoor sowing when I have tried it.

Once you get giant meadow rue to flower in your garden, there’s a pretty good chance that it will self-sow (though not to the point of being problematic).

Description

Both of the common names of Thalictrum rochebrunianum—giant meadow rue and lavender mist—give you a good idea what to expect from this elegant perennial. In average soil, it’s usually 4 to 6 feet tall; in rich, moist soil, it can easily reach 6 to 8 feet in height. The upright stems carry lacy leaves and are topped with airy clouds of small, pinkish purple flowers, mostly in late summer. Giant meadow rue shows off best in large groups, and/or against a dark background, such as a deep green hedge or tree or a dark-colored wall. Light shade is ideal in most areas. Perennial; Zones 4 to 7 or 8.

Collected in early to mid September 2023. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
