French marigolds (Tagetes patula) typically reach a few feet tall, with a loosely bushy habit. They start flowering in early summer and continue until frost. The flowers are small compared to the size of the plant, but there is a pleasing balance between the colorful blooms and the rich green foliage.
‘Cinnabar’ is a strain that originated at Great Dixter, with deep red petals rimmed in golden orange. I have purchased seed of ‘Cinnabar’ three times from what I consider to be reputable UK sources, and each time, most of the flowers look like that; some, however, are a bit more orange, and a few are yellow, particularly during the hottest part of the summer—all on plants that are consistently around 3 feet tall. Because of the variation in color, I was calling it ‘Supposedly Cinnabar’, but I feel pretty sure that this is the true strain, so I’m now selling it simply as ‘Cinnabar’. Full sun. Annual.
Harvested in August through October 2020. At least 15 seeds. I save seed only from plants with ‘Cinnabar’-type flowers, but be aware that these seeds could produce orange- or yellow-flowered plants as well as the correct gold-rimmed reds.
