Succisa pratensis ‘Alba’ (White Devil’s Bit) [15 Seeds]
$4.50
Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because germination may require patience and experimentation. I started my original plant by sowing the seeds in a pot in fall, barely covering them with growing medium, and leaving the pots outdoors in a spot protected from mice; then they germinated in spring.
I have, however, seen some references suggest that the seeds need a short warm period before chilling. So, if you are sowing after September, you may want to keep the pot in a warm spot indoors for about 3 weeks, then put it in a plastic bag and refrigerate it for about 8 weeks before moving it back to a warm, bright place (remove the bag if the pot will be in direct sun).
I’ll put some extra seeds in the packet so you could try both sowing approaches, if you’d like, and see which works best for you.
Additional info: On March 1, 2021, I sowed some of these seeds on moist paper towel, put it in a plastic bag, and set it under lights in a warm (75° to 80°F) spot. The first one germinated on March 15!

Description
This uncommon white-flowered form of devil’s bit (Succisa pratensis ‘Alba’) grows in rather open, 3- to 5-foot-tall clumps of slender stems topped with small round bobbles of white blooms from June into September. It looks particularly good with tall grasses, such as switch grasses (Panicum) and Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans). Full sun to light shade; soil that’s on the moist side seems best but the plant may adapt to drier conditions. The species is seldom grown in the US, and there is almost no published information about this white form, but I’m guessing it would have the same hardiness range: Zones 5 to 9.
Collected in August and September 2022. At least 15 seeds.

I had about 50% germination on these — plants are looking healthy!
