Sorghastrum nutans (Indian Grass) [30 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because germination may be slow and irregular. One option is sowing in fall or winter and leaving them outdoors; then the seeds can sprout when conditions are right in spring. Or, you could try sowing in warm, bright conditions; if no seedlings appear in 4 to 6 weeks, then give them an artificial chilling period of 1 to 2 months. Either way, I’d suggest surface-sowing (gently press the seeds into the surface of the growing medium). Sow them into cell packs, or sow them all in one pot and transplant the seedlings (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 10 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Description

Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans) is a clump-forming, warm-season grass with spiky, golden tan panicles in late summer, long-lasting seedheads, and orange-yellow fall color; 4 to 6 feet tall. This species is beautiful and adaptable, growing well in a range of soil conditions, though it can tend to sprawl in nutrient-rich soil; the stems are much stronger in drier, less-fertile soil. It looks equally lovely in a large border and a meadow, with several features that provide multi-season interest. The leafy clumps provide shelter and nesting sites for birds, and the abundant seeds supply fall-into-winter food for them too. U.S. native (seed collected from my meadow in Bucks County, PA). Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.

Harvested in mid to late September 2023. At least 30 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
