Description
Malevolence (Solanum atropurpureum), also known as purple devil, really sends a message, though the exact message may vary depending on the viewer. To the uninitiated (non-gardener), it can say “stay away” or “don’t touch”; to a plant nerd, it says “don’t touch…but oh, go on, you know you want to.” I assure you that if you grow this anti-social but wicked cool plant, you too will try to touch it at least once!
The upright, branching stems bristle with deep purple spines, which show off best where backlit by the rising or setting sun or set against a light-colored wall or fence. The green leaves also carry purple spines. Small, yellow flowers bloom starting in midsummer; they mature into inedible, marble-like fruits that start are white-mottled green and mature to bright orange-yellow. Height is usually 4 to 5 feet, but the plants can really go to town in rich, moist soil; last year, my garden plants were well over 6 feet tall. They stay smaller when grown in containers. Full sun. Annual.
Collected in mid to late September 2023. At least 12 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
