Description
Mohr’s rosinweed (Silphium mohrii) shares many of the good qualities of other silphiums, including an abundance of daisy-form summer flowers that provide food for a variety of insects, and seeds to feed wild birds as well. Of the four silphium species I grow here at Hayefield, this one gets the nod for its softer yellow color, which makes it a distinctive addition to a border, and its long flowering season. (The bright yellow blooms of the others are lovely, but there are many options for bright yellow daisies in summer.) The plants produce basal clumps of hairy, lace-shaped leaves, then send up hairy, 3- to 5-foot tall stems, which are branched along the upper half. The blooms usually begin here in late July and continue into October. Native to parts of the southern US. Full sun; average to dry soil. Perennial; Zones 5 to 9.
Collected in September and October 2022. At least 12 seeds. Ecotype unknown. Shipping to US addresses only.
