Silene virginica (Fire Pink) [15 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that require a chilling period to initiate germination. (Handling Seeds that Need Chilling)

The easiest approach is to sow these seeds (1/4 inch deep) in fall through midwinter and leave the pot outdoors. That’s how I started my plants; seeds winter-sown on December 30 started to sprout on March 30. Your experience may vary.

If you sow after mid-February or so, give the seeds an artificial chilling period of about a month.

Description

If you’re looking to brighten up the palette of your spring garden, fire pink (Silene virginica) is definitely worth a look. Native to much of eastern North America, this showy woodland wildflower bears brilliant red, five-petaled flowers on 12- to 18-inch-tall stems from mid-spring to early summer. They’re a great source of nectar for early-returning hummingbirds. Partial shade. Perennial; Zones 4 to 8. Individual plants can be short-lived but the patch may continue through self-sowing.

Collected in mid-June 2022. At least 15 seeds. Limited quantity; one packet per customer. Ecotype unknown. Shipping to US addresses only.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
