Silene regia (Royal Catchfly) [15 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-sowers only, because they may require patience and experimentation. The easiest approach is to surface-sow the seeds (pressed into the moist growing medium) in fall to mid-winter and leave the pot outdoors. If you sow after January, put the pot in a plastic bag and refrigerate it for about 2 months before moving it to a warm place for germination.

It’s possible that these seeds could germinate if started in warm, bright conditions. But if you don’t see any sprouting after about 3 weeks, then try the refrigerator-chilling approach suggested above.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Royal catchfly (Silene regia) contributes bright sparks to the mid- and late-summer garden, with five-petaled, rich red blooms on 2- to 3-foot (sometimes 4-foot) stems. Like the earlier-flowering fire pink (Silene virginica), it is a favorite with hummingbirds. Royal catchfly is native to parts of central North America but not especially common anywhere. Full sun to light shade; good drainage is important. Perennial; Zones 5 to 8.

2020 supply sold out. Fresh seed should be available in September 2021. At least 15 seeds.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
