Silene regia (Royal Catchfly) [15 Seeds]

$4.50

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that benefit from or require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to surface-sow the seeds (pressed into the moist growing medium) in a pot in fall to mid winter and leave them outdoors so they can get a natural chilling period. If you sow after January, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months..

It’s possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal rate) if started in warm, bright conditions. But if you don’t see any sprouting after about 3 weeks, then try the artificial chilling period suggested above.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Royal catchfly (Silene regia) contributes bright sparks to the mid- and late-summer garden, with five-petaled, rich red blooms on 2- to 3-foot (sometimes 4-foot) stems. Like the earlier-flowering fire pink (Silene virginica), it is a favorite with hummingbirds. Royal catchfly is native to parts of central North America but not especially common anywhere. Full sun to light shade; good drainage is important. Perennial; Zones 5 to 8.

Collected in September 2022. At least 15 seeds. Ecotype unknown.
