Germination Information: One approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in fall to late winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing technique can work well for this species.)

It is possible for these seeds to germinate if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 3 weeks or so, then give the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Yellow pincushion flower (Scabiosa ochroleuca or S. columbaria subsp. ochroleuca) is also known as cream scabious and pale yellow scabious. As all of the names indicate, the flowers are indeed a soft yellow to cream color, making this plant a charming companion for the usual blue or pink forms of perennial scabious in a border or cottage-style garden.

Yellow pincushion flower forms airy clumps with small but abundant blooms from early or midsummer to frost. The flowers are held at the tips of slender stems that bob and sway as bumblebees and other pollinators work the blossoms. Height is usually in the 18- to 30-inch-tall range. (If you love the pale color but need a taller plant, consider Cephalaria gigantea instead.) Full sun for best flowering. It is said to be hardy in Zones 4 to 10, but in my winter-wet Zone 6/7 garden, it sometimes rots out by spring. It grows quickly and flowers the first year, though, so it’s lovely even as an annual, and it does tend to self-sow.

Harvested in July through September 2023. At least 20 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.

Less successful sowing of this one (30% germination), but success nonetheless.

I’m sorry you were disappointed in these, Claire. I’ve sent you a refund.
