Description
I’ve had purple Japanese burnet (Sanguisorba tenuifolia var. purpurea or S. tenuifolia ‘Purpurea’) growing here at Hayefield for many years, producing its typical reddish purple flower heads atop 5- to 7-foot-tall stems in late summer into fall. Nearly a decade ago, I spotted a clump that repeatedly flowered at about 3 feet tall without any pruning. I collected seeds from it, and the offspring were also compact: in the 30- to 40-inch-tall range. There is some variability in the foliage and flower size but all had the usual bloom color. The compact clumps are growing well away from typical species plants here but I can’t guarantee these seeds will produce naturally compact plants; still, if you are a fan of Japanese burnet, or if you enjoy investigating uncommon variants, you may find them worth a try. Full sun to light shade; soil that is on the moist side is best. Perennial; Zones 4 to 8.
2022-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in late October 2023. Each packet contains at least 12 seeds. One packet per customer. Shipping to US addresses only.
