Pycnanthemum muticum (Short-Toothed Mountain Mint) [30 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-sowers only, because they are tiny and require some patience. Sow in pots indoors or outdoors (do not cover the seeds; just press them into the surface) and keep them moist in a warm, bright place. Germination may be slow and irregular, with seedlings appearing over a period of weeks. They remain very small for another month or two, but once you transplant them to pots (either individually or in groups of 3 or 4), they will eventually put on a nice amount of growth in summer and are ready to move to their final position in fall.

Description

Short-toothed mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum) produces 2- to 3-foot-tall stems with intensely mint-scented, deep green leaves. Button-like, green heads with small, pinkish white flowers appear in mid- to late summer over long-lasting, silvery bracts. The plant spreads by creeping roots to form large patches: perhaps too much of a spreader in the loose, rich soil of a typical garden border but perfect for a “wild” area, large naturalistic border, or meadow planting. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators love it! It’s a fragrant addition to handheld bouquets too.

Short-toothed mountain mint is native to most of the eastern United States. I collected these seeds from plants that grow wild in my meadow in Bucks County, PA, where they grow very close to P. tenuifolium and P. virginianum. I’m not sure how likely they are to cross, but in the interest of full disclosure, please be aware that there might be some possibility of natural hybridization. Full sun. Perennial; Zones 4 to 8.

Collected in late October 2023. At least 30 seeds. (These seeds are difficult to clean, so I usually list only one or two packets at a time so I can keep up with demand. If they appear to be sold out, there’s a good chance I will have more available in a day or two. You can sign up for a back-in-stock notification if you’d like to get an email.) PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
