Description
Like the common, green-leaved version, variegated self-heal or heal-all (Prunella vulgaris ‘Variegata’) has spiky heads of purplish flowers in summer, but its special feature is its cream-splashed foliage. The markings are most noticeable in cool weather; in summer heat, the plant may appear entirely green, but the markings usually return in fall. Variegated self-heal is not a show-stopper but is worth trying if you like weird weeds or collect anything-but-green plants. I’ve had it around for more than 15 years (originally from Glasshouse Works, I think); it doesn’t seem to be in the trade any more. Variegated self-heal self-sows and comes at least partly true from seed; remove any solid-green seedlings that appear. If you collect seeds to share with friends of seed exchanges, take them from the plants with the showiest markings. Full sun to partial shade. Perennial; Zones 4 to 9.
Collected starting in late August 2022. Each packet includes at least 15 seeds.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
