Plantago major ‘Atropurpurea’ (Purple-Leaved Plantain) [30 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I recommend these very small seeds for experienced seed-sowers only, because they may require some patience and careful handling. The easiest approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in fall to late winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after February, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month.

It is possible that these seeds could germinate if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions, though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage. If you try this approach and no seedlings appear within 3 to 4 weeks, then try the artificial-chilling approach above before moving them back to warmth and light.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Purple-leaved plantain (Plantago major ‘Atropurpurea’ or ‘Rubrifolia’), an ornamental version of a common lawn and garden weed, produces rosettes of broad leaves that start out green and darken to reddish purple. (When well grown, in rich, most soil, this plant can look much like a compact, purple-leaved hosta.) Slender green bloom spikes emerge from the center of the clump; clip them off if you don’t like them or let them stay if you want the plant to self-sow (which it will do, abundantly). Usually 6 to 12 inches tall. Full sun to partial shade. Zones 3 to 9.

Collected in August 2023. At least 30 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
