Phytolacca americana ‘Sunny Side Up’ (Golden Pokeweed) [10 Seeds]
Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who are experienced with seeds that require or benefit from a chilling period. The easiest approach is to sow the seeds (about 1/4″ deep) in fall to midwinter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.
If you sow after January, there may not be enough time for the seeds to get a natural chilling period, so consider giving them an artificial chilling period (of about 2 months) moving them to a warm, bright place for germination.
Keep in mind that while most of the seedlings will be golden, some green ones may also appear. I like to give the seedlings a chance to develop a true leaf or two before determining the color. I suggest gently plucking the green seedlings out of the seed pot, or discarding them when you separate the seedlings at the potting-on stage.
Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

‘Sunny Side Up’ pokeweed is a dramatically different foliage form of ordinary American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), with bright yellow leaves. It does share some traits with the straight species, including stout, top-branching, reddish pink stems usually 5 to 7 feet tall; chains of white flowers that mature to black berries; and a tendency to self-sow. Though the species is a US native, it is considered invasive in some areas. It also has some toxic properties if eaten. So please, do more research before buying if you have any concerns about these potential issues and do not order these seeds if you have any doubts about them. Full sun to partial shade. Zones 4 or 5 to 10.
Collected in October 2022. At least 10 seeds.
