Phuopsis stylosa (Caucasian Crosswort) [12 Seeds]

Germination Information: Honestly, the easiest way to get pink crosswort established is with a division or purchased plant. It’s very hard to find for sale, though, so seeds may be your only option. There’s little information about how to start them, unfortunately, and I haven’t (yet) tried to raise this species from seed myself. According to Rob B. of Rob’s Plants, he found them quick to germinate when started in warm conditions, so I’d suggest surface-sowing indoors in late winter to mid spring, or in a pot outdoors in late spring through early summer.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Caucasian crosswort (Phuopsis stylosa) is a definitely different groundcover: beautiful in bloom and interesting in leaf, but with an unfortunate side as well. It grows in expanding mats of lax stems clad in whorls of short, pointed, bright green leaves, accented with showy heads of rich pink blooms that have long, slender styles extending beyond the petals. Height in leaf is about 4 inches; in bloom, it’s about 6 inches tall. It flowers most abundantly in early summer, with some scattered rebloom through the rest of the summer, especially if you keep the dead flowers clipped off. The unfortunate part is its somewhat skunky scent. In my opinion, it’s not horrible—you usually just get light whiffs of it if you’re walking past or working nearby—but it may bother you if you are sensitive it its particular order. The scent is much stronger if you’re working directly with the plant (deadheading to extend the bloom season, for example), or if you happen to step on it. So, it’s probably a good idea to site Caucasian crosswort in a less-traveled part of your garden (on a slope, for example, or cascading over a retaining wall), not along a main walkway, near your front door, outside a open window, or next to a deck or patio. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 5 to 8.

Collected in July and August 2022. Each packet contains at least 12 seeds. Very limited quantity; one packet per customer.
