Phlomoides tuberosa (Tuberous Jerusalem Sage) [15 Seeds]
$4.85
Germination Information: In my experience, sowing these seeds—gently pressed into the surface of the growing medium—in fall through midwinter and leaving them outdoors is likely to give the best results. (The winter-sowing technique works well for this species. Seeds I sowed this way on December 25 started sprouting on February 24, and I was very pleased with the total number of seedlings.)
Some references say that it is possible for these seeds to germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal rate) if you start them in warm, bright conditions (indoors under lights, for example, or outdoors in summer), giving them an artificial chilling period if they don’t germinate after about a month. I tried that in 2023 with fairly good results: Seeds I sowed indoors, under lights, on March 8 started germinating on March 16. I do think the total germination was less than with the winter-sowing method, but warm-sowing is an option if you are starting at a non-optimal time.

Description
Tuberous Jerusalem sage (Phlomoides tuberosa, formerly Phlomis tuberosa) is a distinctive sight in the summer border, with 3- to 4-foot-tall stemmed topped with tiered whorls of purplish pink flowers over mostly basal clumps of broad, deeply veined, deep green foliage. Leave the stems in place to enjoy the interesting seedheads for months. If you dig up the clumps to divide them at some point, you will notice the swollen parts on the roots (hence the “tuberous” part of the common name). Full sun. Zones 5 to 9.
Collected in early to mid July 2023. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
