Phacelia purshii (Miami Mist) [20 Seeds]

$4.50

Germination Information: As a winter annual, Miami mist is best sown about 1/8 inch deep outdoors in summer to early fall for germination in early to late fall. The small seedlings will overwinter and then produce their ferny foliage and beautiful blooms in spring.

Description

These seeds are of the true Phacelia purshii—unlike the seeds usually provided by the few commercial sources that list it for sale. My original seeds were from the Brandywine Conservancy’s Seed Program. The species usually has blue flowers, but one of my plants had white to very pale blue flowers. This listing is for seeds from blue- and white-flowered plants growing next to each other, so the offspring may be either color. Native to parts of eastern North America.

Also, as self-sown seedlings began germinating in September 2022, I noticed a number of green-and-yellow or solid yellow-leaved ones in a spot where blue-flowered plants were blooming in spring. So, if you purchased seed from this spring’s plants, you may find some too! I am going to try to separate the foliage variants from the typical species plants for the 2023 harvest.

Full sun to partial shade. Winter annual.

2022-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in mid- to late June 2023. At least 20 seeds. PA ecotype.
