Germination Information: Start these seeds indoors in early to mid spring in warm, bright conditions (for example, on a heat mat under plant lights). The seeds are extremely tiny, so you need to handle the open packet very carefully; you could lose the entire batch with a single sneeze! Hold the open packet horizontally over a pot of moistened growing mix and gently tap on the side with one finger to coax the seeds out slowly and evenly. Press them into the surface lightly, then mist or drip water over the surface to settle them in. It helps to have clear plastic over them so they don’t dry out before they germinate (usually about a week in ideal conditions).
In following years, you may find some self-sown seedlings where the plants were growing the previous season.

Description
Petunia exserta is daintier than most hybrids, but there is nothing demure about its brilliant red blooms. It has a somewhat open, spreading habit in the ground, so by itself, it tends to look a bit straggly, but it’s terrific tucked among other plants near the front or middle of a bed or border for pops of color. This uncommon species petunia also grows beautifully in mixed container plantings. The flowers often attract hummingbirds, too. Full sun. Annual.
