Persicaria virginiana (Jumpseed) [15 Seeds]

$3.95

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to purchase and surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in fall to mid winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after January, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

If you’re a fan of variegated plants, you may already be familiar with the showier version of this species: Persicaria virginiana Variegata Group (also known as ‘Variegata’ or ‘Painter’s Palette’), which has red seeds and white-splashed leaves. This is the straight species, with solid green leaves. It is not nearly as eye-catching, but you may prefer it if you want something more natural-looking to fill space in a large shade garden or woodland. (It can spread by both rhizomes and self-sowing, which may be problematic in a small garden.) The upright stems produce slender wands of tiny, greenish white flowers in mid- or late summer to early fall that mature into green seedpods in fall, for a total height of about 3 feet. The species is native to the eastern half of North America; these seeds are from plants growing wild here at Hayefield in Bucks County, PA. Partial to full shade. Perennial; Zones 4 to 10.

Collected in October 2021 At least 15 seeds.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
