Penstemon ex dark-leaved form (Beardtongue) [20 Seeds]

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who have experience with seeds that benefit from or require a chilling period. The easiest approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in a pot in fall to late winter, setting them outdoors so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.

If you sow after February, give the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months.

It is possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 3 weeks or so, then try the artificial chilling period described above.

By the time the seedlings have a few true leaves, you may notice that some of them are distinctly green and others are tinged with red or purple. The reddish to purplish ones are most likely to have the darkest foliage in following years. The full color may not develop until the plants have gone through a winter, though.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

I collected these seeds from ‘Dark Towers’ beardtongue (Penstemon), which forms dense, evergreen clumps of basal leaves, then produces upright, 2- to 3-foot-tall stems topped with tubular, light pink to pink-tinged white flowers in late spring to early summer. The key feature of this selection is the particularly dark color of the leaves, stems, and seedheads. Seeds from this selection will produce seedlings with a range of foliage colors, from deep purple to purplish green to solid green (as shown in a couple of the photos here). They are all pretty, but if you’re looking for the richest foliage color, keep only the seedlings that are darkest after they have gone through at least one winter. On any of the seedlings the color tends to be darkest in spring to early summer. In mid- to late summer, the leaves may turn green or red-tinged green, but the stems stay deep red, and the developing seedheads will also be deep red.

Harvested in early September 2023. At least 20 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
