Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because they may require some patience. The easiest approach is to surface-sow (do not cover) the seeds in fall to late winter, setting them outdoors so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring.
If you sow after February, give the pot an artificial chilling period (in a refrigerator) of about 2 months.
It is possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within 3 weeks or so, then try the artificial-chilling approach before moving them back to warmth and light.
By the time the seedlings have a few true leaves, you may notice that some of them are distinctly green and others are yellowish green. The yellowish green ones are most likely to have the brightest foliage in following years, but I suggest also keeping the greener seedlings for a year or two, just to see if they too will be yellow in spring or if they will be consistently green (in the latter case, discard those plants or move them elsewhere).

‘Gold Foil’ foxglove penstemon (Penstemon digitalis) produces clumps of yellow spring foliage that ages to yellowish green or light green by bloom time. The summer flowering stems usually reach 2 to 3 feet tall, with tubular, pink-tinged white flowers. The persistent basal foliage tends to turn an old-gold color, sometimes with maroon shading, for winter. Be aware that the color intensity of these seedlings will vary, from greenish to a really bright yellow. I keep and collect from only the brightest plants and encourage you to do the same if you want to maintain this strain. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.
