Panicum virgatum (Switch Grass) [30 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: One option is sowing in fall or winter and leaving the pot outdoors; then the seeds can sprout when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing approach can work well with this species.) Or, you could try sowing in warm, bright conditions; if no seedlings appear in 4 to 6 weeks, then give the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months. Either way, I’d suggest surface-sowing (gently press the seeds into the surface of the growing medium). Germination may be slow and irregular.

Transplant the seedlings (in groups) to pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 8 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Description

Switch grass (Panicum virgatum) is a clump-forming, warm-season grass well suited to borders, naturalistic plantings, and meadows. These seeds are from plants growing wild in my own meadow in Bucks County, PA. They typically reach 5 to 6 feet tall, with an upright habit and olive green to grayish green foliage that sometimes has a reddish tinge; fall color is usually yellow. Switch grass pairs perfectly with many other tall natives for late-season beauty, including Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum), ironweeds (Vernonia), Joe-Pye weeds (Eutrochium), New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), and perennial sunflowers (Helianthus)—to name just a few! Full sun. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9.

Collected in late September and early October 2023. At least 30 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
