Description
Golden groundsel (Packera aurea, formerly Senecio aureus) is a charming wildflower with deep green basal leaves and slender, upright stems usually around 1 foot tall. They’re topped through late spring with button-like purple buds that open into small, bright yellow, daisy-form flowers. Easy and adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions, it spreads by short rhizomes, making an excellent evergreen groundcover under shrubs and trees and in low-maintenance areas. Golden groundsel is a cute cut flower for spring arrangements too! Native to much of eastern North America, this little beauty can grow in sun or shade (even dry shade). Perennial; Zones 3 to 9.
Collected in late May 2022 from wild plants growing in my meadow in Milford Township, Bucks County, PA (so PA ecotype). At least 20 seeds.
