It took me way too long to catch on to the delights of cool-season annuals. It just seemed like a waste to put time and resources into starting and planting out something that would bloom for only a month or two and fizzle out once summer arrived. Fivespot (Nemophila maculata) is one of the species that made me realize what I’d been missing all those years. It’s a sweet little thing, producing low, loose mounds of scallop-edged, rich green leaves and cupped, white, purple-veined blooms that bear a dark purple-blue spot at the end of each of the five petals—hence the name “fivespot” (though, if you look carefully, you’ll notice that there can occasionally be six spots instead!). The total height was around 6 to 10 inches. It’s a wonderful way to fill otherwise empty spaces in beds or pots while you are waiting for the weather to warm up enough to plant out tropicals and heat-loving annuals. This California native is an excellent early food source for pollinators too. Here in my Pennsylvania garden, it grew fine in full sun, but it may last longer with morning sun and afternoon shade, or light all-day shade, in warmer areas. Annual.
