Description

Forget-me-nots (Myosotis) are hardly rare, but you don’t see them all that often these days, maybe because it can take a bit of planning to get them going. It’s possible to grow them as annuals, but they need a super-early start indoors. As biennials, they produce just a clump of roughly oblong, green leaves the first year. The following year, they send up branching, 8- to 10-inch-tall stems that carry beautiful sky-blue blooms, just in time to create airy clouds around the flowers of other mid- to late-spring bloomers, such as pansies, daffodils, and tulips.

The plants usually look ratty by the time summer heat arrives. They may last an additional year or two if you cut them back hard (to around 3 inches) when they’re about done flowering, but I usually wait until the plants start to yellow, pull them out, and then shake them around to scatter the seeds where I want to have new plants next year. Woodland forget-me-not (M. sylvatica) can grow in full sun but often does best in morning sun and afternoon shade. Annual or biennial; reportedly hardy in Zones 3 to 8. The plants can self-sow freely.
