Germination Information: I recommend these only for patient gardeners with experience handling challenging perennial seeds with multi-cycle germination patterns. Apparently these grow best if given a cold period of 2 to 3 months, followed by a warm period of 2 to 3 months, and then another 2- to 3-month cold period. It’s up to you whether you want to give them artificial cold-warm-cold periods to try to speed up the sprouting or just sow them in an outdoor pot or nursery bed as soon as you get them; some seedlings might appear the first spring but more likely not until the second spring, particularly if you sow them much after September. (Seeds I started with the winter-sowing method on December 25, 2022 finally began sprouting on March 20, 2024.)

Description

Solomon’s plume or false Solomon’s seal (Maianthemum racemosum, formerly Smilacina racemosa) is a woodland wildflower native to much of the eastern half of North America. Typically reaching 2 to 3 feet tall, the arching stems carry alternate, rich green leaves and are tipped with a cluster of small, creamy white flowers in mid to late spring. The flowers develop into round, red-speckled berries that ripen to solid red in early fall. These seeds are from wild plants growing here at Hayefield in Bucks County, PA. Partial shade; average to moist soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.

2023-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in September 2024. The seeds have been cleaned and stored moist at room temperature since September 15, 2023. Each packet will contain at least 15 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
