Description
It takes some patience to get the best from honesty (Lunaria annua), but this old-fashioned favorite offers a worthwhile payoff, with a pretty display of purple flowers that are followed by circular, flat pods on the branching, 3-foot-tall stems. When you gently rub or peel off the dull outer covering of the pods, you reveal a papery, silver center that gives it another of its common names: silver dollar. That’s in the second year, though: this biennial produces only mounds of green foliage the first year.
‘Variegata’ offers the bonus feature of irregular white frosting along the leaf edges. The timing and intensity of the markings vary: you might notice a bit of variegation the first year, but most often, it shows up in the second spring. Even then, it can vary, but when it’s good, it’s really good! Full sun (in cooler areas) to partial shade. Biennial (Zones 4 to 8).
2022-collected seeds are sold out. I probably won’t have seeds available again until summer 2024. At least 12 seeds.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
