Lobelia inflata ‘Sweet Talk’ (Variegated Indian Tobacco) [40 Seeds]

$4.50

Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, partly because they are very tiny and partly because they may require some patience and experimentation. The easiest approach is to surface-sow the seeds outdoors, in the area where you’d like them to grow, pretty much any time of year, so they can germinate when conditions are right.

If you prefer to start the seeds indoors, consider giving them an artificial chilling period for about a month before moving them to a warm, bright place for germination. It is possible that these seeds could germinate if you start them in warm, bright conditions without a chilling period. But if you don’t see any signs of sprouting after about 3 weeks, then give the pot a chilling period as described above.

Once the seedlings start developing true leaves, it’s pretty easy to tell which have some variegation and which are solid green. I suggest keeping only the seedlings with the brightest variegation; discard the plain green ones or plant them elsewhere.

Description

Indian tobacco (Lobelia inflata) isn’t the showiest member of the lobelia clan, but it has a quiet charm, even in its species form. It starts out as a low, leafy rosette, then sends up 12- to 30-inch-tall stems with small, pale blue flowers. It quite often grows like a biennial, with flowers the second year, but it may bloom the same year from a spring sowing. Usually beginning in midsummer and continuing into fall, the flowers of this eastern North American native species are followed by small, inflated seedpods. ‘Sweet Talk’ adds a significantly showier feature, in the form of splashy yellow variegation. The amount and intensity of the markings vary from plant to plant, and not all of the seedlings are variegated (I’d estimate maybe 50% are). These seeds originally came to me as a gift from another Pennsylvania gardener. Full sun to partial shade. Annual or biennial; Zones 3 or 4 to 9.

Collected starting in late August 2022. At least 40 extremely small seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
