Description
Indian tobacco (Lobelia inflata) isn’t the showiest member of the lobelia clan, but it has a quiet charm, even in its species form. It starts out as a low, leafy rosette, then sends up 12- to 30-inch-tall stems with small, pale blue flowers. It quite often grows like a biennial, with flowers the second year, but it may bloom the same year from a spring sowing. Usually beginning in midsummer and continuing into fall, the flowers of this eastern North American native species are followed by small, inflated seedpods. ‘Sweet Talk’ adds a significantly showier feature, in the form of splashy yellow variegation. The amount and intensity of the markings vary from plant to plant, and not all of the seedlings are variegated (I’d estimate maybe 50% are). These seeds originally came to me as a gift from another Pennsylvania gardener. Full sun to partial shade. Annual or biennial; Zones 3 or 4 to 9.
Collected starting in late August 2022. At least 40 extremely small seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
