Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, partly because they are very tiny and partly because they might require some patience and experimentation.

One approach is to surface-sow the seeds in a pot in fall to late winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing technique works very well for this species.)

If you sow after February, consider giving the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months.

It is also possible that these seeds will germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) when started in warm, moist conditions. One spring, I sowed some on April 5, indoors on a heat mat and under lights, and the first sprouts appeared on April 12, with more seedlings gradually appearing over the next 4 to 6 weeks. Your experience will likely vary depending on your conditions.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) produces showy 3- to 5-foot-tall spikes of brilliant red flowers in late summer. My original seeds came from a plant that appeared on its own in my southeastern Pennsylvania (Bucks County) meadow. This US native is a favorite with hummingbirds and butterflies. Full sun to partial shade; prefers soil that’s on the moist to wet side. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.

Collected in mid September 2023. At least 50 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
