Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because they are very tiny and require careful handling. A bit of chilling may give the highest germination rate: Surface-sow in a pot in late winter to early spring and set it outdoors, so the seeds can germinate when conditions are right for them. It is also possible they could germinate if you start them indoors under lights from late winter to late spring, or in a pot outdoors in late spring to midsummer. If no seedlings appear within 3 weeks or so, though, consider giving the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month.

The last time I grew this species from seeds, I started them indoors under lights on March 20, and they began germinating on April 3. Your experience is likely to vary.

Description

Purple toadflax (Linaria purpurea) adds months of elegance to borders and cottage gardens. It grows in clumps that usually reach about 2 feet tall, with upright stems that are lined on the lower half or so with short, slender, gray-green or blue-green foliage and along the upper part with small, spurred blooms in shades of purple. The flowers begin blooming in late spring to early summer and can continue to late summer or early fall. If your plants stop flowering in midsummer, consider trimming them back by about half to encourage a flush of new growth and likely rebloom (and to prevent self-sowing too). Individual plants can be short-lived, but you can always have some purple toadflax around if you allow a few stems to ripen their seeds at some point during the summer or fall. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 5 to 9.
