Germination Information: Sow these seeds about 1/8″ deep in warm, bright conditions indoors from late winter through spring or outdoors in summer. Soaking the seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing and/or providing extra warmth from a heat mat can help to speed germination.

The last time I started this species from seed (2021), I sowed on March 1—under lights and on a heat mat—and the seeds germinated on March 4. Your experience may vary.

Description

As you can guess from its name, seashore mallow (Kosteletzkya virginica) is native to coastal areas along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Fortunately, it can also adapt well to garden conditions, preferring full sun and evenly moist soil. It produces grayish green leaves on open clumps of branching stems that typically reach 3 to 5 feet tall, with hibiscus-like pink flowers from early or midsummer to early fall. Each flower lasts only one day, but new ones form through the whole bloom period. Perennial; Zones 6 to 9.

Harvested in September 2021. At least 15 seeds.

Smooth purple coneflower (Echinacea laevigata) is considered to be a federally endangered species. Several years ago, I received a gift of seeds from a mystery donor and have been enjoying it in my garden ever since. The plant-to-plant variation is really interesting—different color intensity and petal widths, for example—but all show the typical drooping petals and smooth leaves and stems. It has been flowering for a good 3 weeks already, while E. purpurea is just starting to flower. Easy from winter-sown seed. I’ve had it germinate in warm conditions too, without any chilling, but at a lower germination percentage. Lovely as a single plant in the garden and gorgeous in groups! Large-flowered collomia (Collomia grandiflora): perfectly peachy, with blue pollen as a perfect finishing touch. Another annual native to California that adapts easily to life elsewhere, including here in PA: Farnsworth’s jewel flower (Streptanthus farnsworthianus). The small flowers are cute by themselves, but against those purple bracts—just wow.
