Morning glories (Ipomoea) are mostly prized for their flowers, of course, and the ruffled, magenta blooms of ‘Golden Chain’ certainly are pretty and abundant. What really makes this strain special, though, is its bright yellow foliage: lovely on its own and an eye-popping contrast to the bright blooms.
This unique strain came to me as a gift from a gardening friend with an excellent eye for special plants, and 2022 was my first year growing it. I have no information on its origin and know very little else about it, beyond how it has performed for me. The only online reference to it says it grows 4 to 6 feet tall, but it was significantly more vigorous than that here. I grew it in a large planter with a 6-foot trellis, which it climbed up, then cascaded down, and then climbed up again, so some of the vines were well over 15 feet in total length. I did give it a lot of water and some liquid seaweed fertilizer but nothing much different from my other morning glories. The one thing I can note about it culture-wise is that it would probably appreciate some shade during the hottest part of the day. Mine was growing on a south-facing shed wall, and it drooped dramatically pretty much every sunny day from mid morning to mid afternoon. I thought it was a goner many times, but it perked up every time as long as I kept its container watered. Next year, I plan to give it a spot with morning sun, mid-day shade, and afternoon-to-evening sun. (That has worked very well for me with ‘Keiryu’, another morning glory with chartreusey foliage.) Please note that ‘Golden Chain’ is likely to self-sow. Annual.
Collected in September and October 2023. At least 10 seeds. Be aware that these seeds are open-pollinated, and I grow other morning glories, so there is a possibility of some genetic variation. I do try to keep the various strains separated, though, to minimize the chance of crossing.
