Hordeum vulgare ‘Purple Karma’ (Barley) [25 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: Direct-sow the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in early spring. A mid- to late fall sowing may work in warmer climates.  I’ve had good luck here in my Pennsylvania garden by direct-sowing (around 1/4″ deep) in spring. Last year, I sowed on March 14, with germination starting on March 19 and harvest in mid July; a second test sowing on April 17 started sprouting on April 25, with harvest in late July. The timing will vary for you depending on your climate and weather.

Description

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is something you’d usually grow to eat, and ‘Purple Karma’ is quite good for that, with hulless (and therefore easy-to-clean) seeds and a nutty flavor. I enjoy this long-awned Tibetan strain as an ornamental too, with its distinct purple coloration on the developing heads—so pretty in arrangements. The grain itself is a dark purplish brown. Total height is about 2 feet. Full sun. Annual.

Collected in mid to late July 2022. At least 25 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
