Hordeum vulgare ‘Black Hulless’ (Black Barley) [30 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: There’s not much information out there about growing this heirloom variety in a home garden, but I had good luck here in my Pennsylvania garden by direct-sowing (around 1/4″ deep) in spring. Last year, I sowed on March 22, with germination starting on April 2. The timing will vary for you depending on your climate and weather.

Description

Whether you’re looking to grow barley for its grain or would like to use its long-whiskered heads for cutting, ‘Black Hulless’ is a great choice. It’s pretty easy to get the dark kernels free of the chaff with hand-cleaning, so it can go from the garden to the kitchen without too much work. The stems reach about 2 feet tall, with two-row heads that ripen from green to black-tinged golden brown with long awns; in either stage, they are are a pretty and unusual addition to fresh or dried arrangements. Full sun. Annual.

Collected in mid July 2022. At least 30 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
