Description
Squirreltail grass (Hordeum jubatum), also known as foxtail barley, produces elegant, long-awned seedheads that sway in the slightest summer breeze. This clump-forming, cool-season grass reaches about 18 inches tall. Once you get it growing, this North American native may self-sow freely, to the point of being considered weedy in some areas. Also, be aware that the barbed awns can be irritating to the mouth, skin, and feet of pets and grazing animals. Full sun to light shade. Perennial but can be grown as an annual; Zones 4 to 10.
Harvested in late June 2022. At least 12 seeds. I have trimmed the long awns off of each seed to make sowing easier. Unknown ecotype.
