Glandularia canadensis (Rose Verbena) [15 Seeds]

Germination Information: I have seen advice suggesting that this seed benefits from a chilling period, so you could sow in fall, winter, or very early spring and leave the pot outdoors. Or, you could try sowing in warm conditions. When I tried this in 2021, I surface-sowed in a pot indoors on March 1 at 70° to 75°F, and the first seedling appeared on March 10; in 2022, I sowed on April 7, and the first seedlings germinated on April 20; your experience may vary. Whether you start in cold or warm conditions, it seems normal for germination to be slow and erratic, with seedlings appearing over a period of several weeks after the first sprouting.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Rose verbena (Glandularia canadensis, formerly Verbena canadensis) is an easy, long-blooming beauty, with clusters of rosy to purplish pink flowers. Here at Hayefield, it starts flowering in mid- to late April on overwintered plants or in midsummer from spring-started seedlings and continues into October. The plant usually stays around 8 to 12 inches tall but sends out long trailing stems, so it can get 1 to 2 feet wide over the growing season, or even wider if the stems take root where they touch the ground. Rose verbena thrives in full sun and likes good drainage, particular in winter. It can tolerate dry soil, so it’s great for difficult sites, like slopes and curbside plantings.

Full sun (for best flowering) to light shade. Native to much of eastern North America, rose verbena is reportedly hardy in Zones 6 to 9. (It usually overwinters in my Zone 6/7 garden.) Or,  you can grow it as an annual anywhere—a nice plus if you’re looking to go native in your flower beds and containers. This species is also excellent for attracting butterflies.

Collected starting in mid June 2023. At least 15 seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
