Description
Globe gilia (Gilia capitata)—also known as blue gilia, blue field gilia, bluehead gilia, and blue thimble flower—starts out as a rosette of rich green, lacy leaves, then sends up branching stems carrying small or showy globes of tiny, closely packed, scented blooms in shades of blue. The ultimate height in bloom is usually around 2 feet but may be a foot or two taller in rich, moist soil. This wildflower (native to parts of the western US) blooms for several months: typically late spring or early summer to mid or late summer—longest where summers aren’t too hot, particularly if you regularly clip off the spent flowers. It looks just as good in a border as it does in a meadowy setting, and it makes a cute fresh cut flower in small arrangements. It also attracts a variety of butterflies and other pollinating insects; the local honeybees were ecstatic about the abundance of blooms in my garden. Globe gilia is an annual but is likely to self-sow if there are areas of open soil, so you may need to plant it only once. Full sun for best bloom.
Collected in mid to late July 2023. At least 25 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.
