Gopher spurge, mole spurge, mole plant, and caper spurge are just a few of the common names for this interesting species (Euphorbia lathyris). The plants produce a strongly upright stem lined with narrow, gray-green, white-ribbed leaves in opposite pairs, creating a fascinating accent for form and foliage. Typically reaching 2 to 4 feet tall, the stems are topped with leafy green, angular bracts and insignificant flowers: usually starting in late spring to early summer if it blooms in its second year (that’s how it usually behaves for me), or in late summer to fall if it flowers the first year.
While gopher spurge is a really good-looking plant, it does have some drawbacks. For one, the stems and leaves contain a very irritating, milky sap, so it’s best to avoid touching the plants as much as possible; if you must work around them, cover all bare skin. Definitely avoid getting the sap in your eyes, too, and–of course–don’t eat it. I wouldn’t recommend growing this plant where children or careless garden visitors might get near it. Gopher surge can also self-sow freely, and it is considered invasive in some areas, so do further research if you are still considering growing it.
