Dichanthelium clandestinum (Deertongue Panicum) [25 Seeds]

$4.25

Germination Information: I recommend these only for those who have experience handling seeds that require or benefit from a natural or artificial chilling period.

There is little information available about growing deertongue panicum from seed, so the easiest approach is surface-sowing in fall to midwinter and setting the pot outdoors for sprouting in spring. If you sow after midwinter, you could provide an artificial cold period (2 to 3 months) or try starting in warm conditions to see if that might work for you.

I suggest sowing all of the seeds in one pot and transplanting the seedlings (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 5 or 6 if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants.

Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive.

Description

Deertongue panicum (Dichanthelium [formerly Panicum] clandestinum) is a clump-forming, cool-season grass with broad, tapering, bright green foliage and sprays of tiny green blooms in early to midsummer, followed by airy clusters of small seeds in mid to late summer. Apparently the species produces flowers and seeds again later in the season too; I have to admit that I haven’t noticed that. Height is generally around 3 feet.

You don’t often see deertongue panicum in ornamental gardens, perhaps because it can get somewhat sprawly as the season progresses. But if you have a wild-ish meadow or woodland area, it’s worth having for its wildlife value: as a source of food for a variety of native insects (the foliage) and wild birds (the seeds). Native to much of eastern North America, this species grows wild in my meadow in Bucks County, PA. Full sun to partial shade; average to moist soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8.

Collected in late June 2023. At least 25 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to US addresses only.
