Description

‘Sooty’ is a lovely strain of the classic cottage-garden plant known as sweet William (Dianthus barbatus). Strong, 12- to 18-inch-tall stems are topped with broad heads of velvety, deep red blooms, mostly in early summer (into midsummer if you keep cutting the stems for fresh arrangements, or regularly clip off the finished flower clusters). The foliage may also show a reddish to purplish blush. The species is technically biennial, but I find this one can last for several years (even in a large pot here in my Zone 6/7 garden). It might even flower the first year from a late winter or early spring sowing, so it can act like an annual too.

Full sun. Generally biennial or short-lived perennial; Zones 3 to 8.

Collected in early July 2023. At least 20 seeds. Shipping to US addresses only.

Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
